Santa Pola is a coastal town on the Costa Blanca in the province of Alicante, lying just south of Alicante city. It has kept much of its character as a working fishing port, with a lively harbour and fish market, and a sixteenth-century fortress at the heart of the town. A long seafront promenade links a string of sandy beaches lined with cafés and restaurants serving local seafood and rice dishes.
The town is known for the Salinas de Santa Pola, protected salt flats where flamingos and other wading birds can often be seen, and for boat trips to the small island of Tabarca, a marine reserve popular with swimmers and snorkellers. The headland of Cabo de Santa Pola, topped by a lighthouse, offers walks and wide views along the coast. Life here runs year-round rather than only in summer, giving the town a settled, community feel.
Getting there from the UK is straightforward, as Alicante-Elche airport is a short drive away and has direct flights from many British airports.
