The Mar Menor is a coastal lagoon in the Region of Murcia in south-east Spain, and one of the largest saltwater lagoons in Europe. It is separated from the Mediterranean by La Manga del Mar Menor, a long, narrow strip of land, so homes here can look out over the open sea, the lagoon, or both. The waters of the lagoon are shallow, calm and warm for much of the year, which makes them popular with families and with sailors, windsurfers and kayakers.
Life around the shore is relaxed and outdoors, with promenades, beaches and seafood restaurants in towns such as Los Alcazares, San Javier and San Pedro del Pinatar, where the mud baths at Lo Pagán have long drawn visitors. Cabo de Palos, with its lighthouse and fishing harbour, is well known for diving, while quieter spots such as Los Nietos, Islas Menores and Mar de Cristal sit along the southern shore. Inland, Torre-Pacheco is surrounded by farmland and golf, and the historic port city of Cartagena is close by.
